2) Second question involves Nu Nghe Si Thanh Nga (see Memory Lane). The reader wanted to know more about her life. The following information is for all fans (and future fans) of the lovely Thanh Nga:
“If I’m not mistaken, Miss Thanh Nga was mainly a Cai Luong actress (Vietnamese opera), though she crossed over to “tan nhac” quite a bit, having had a really lovely voice. She was a beautiful lady. In the late 60’s she also starred in some first-rate Vietnamese movies, I’m told one of them was Loan Mat Nhung. In those days she and Tham Thuy Hang were the gems of the Performing Arts of Vietnam. In Cai Luong, she played opposite Thanh Duoc, and someitimes Hung Cuong. One of her famous roles was Lan in Lan va Diep, and a girl (don’t recall the name) in Bong Hong cho Me. Her brother is Bao Quoc, who’s still in Cai Luong today (I think). Miss Thanh Nga died at the age of 37: while performing in 1977, she was shot by a stray bullet, believed to have been fired by someone angry at the Thanh Minh Thanh Nga Troupe for performing for the Communists.

I hope you get some tapes of her Cai Luong show, or even some movies to appreciate her talent and beauty. When she passed away, Vietnam suffered a huge loss, evidenced by the tens of thousands of people who came to say goodbye at her funeral.”
